In Praise of Daycare and Furry Dogs

I perked up when the doctor on TV said, “Those days your son or daughter spends in daycare may be saving their lives.”

According to Dr. Isidore Rosenfeld, “The super sterile environment, keeping your house so clean that children don’t get exposed to anything does not let children build antibodies to strengthen their immune system. “

He said, “If you have an infant or baby get a hairy dog. Children exposed to hairy dogs are less likely to develop asthma later in life. The allergens stimulate the immune system to make antibodies, so that the asthma does not develop later on."

Further he stated:

“Children who are sent to daycare at one to two years old, later in life they are 1/3 less likely to develop leukemia. That is, some contact with children exposes them to a low dose of, whether it is a virus or I don’t know what it is, that strengthens the immune system. The immune system needs to be exposed to a little something, so that when you are really threatened the immune system is there to protect you.”

He also said, “It is very important to wash your hands and be clean, but take it easy.” That is advice I thought I would never hear from a doctor.

BTW we are dog friendly at New Orleans Personal training and at Austin Fitness Trainers.
